Taxes Articles

Taxes are the lifeblood of a nation. They are not paid voluntarily; they are enforced contributions, exacted to enable governments to discharge their functions. In general, the collection of taxes has for main purposes: revenue, repricing, redistribution, and representation. Revenue is the primary purpose for taxation. Taxes give the government funds to spend on infrastructure projects and government functions, such as governance and the establishment of justice systems. Redistribution refers to the transfer of wealth from the rich to the poor. In democracies, this is seen as the equalizing result of tax. Repricing, meanwhile, is levied to accomplish certain goals or ensure the implementation of policies. Finally, representation means the accountability contract between the government and its people. Rulers tax citizens, and citizens in turn demand accountability from the people they pay taxes to. This section is all about taxes - from the different kinds to how to deal with different tax bureaus.

The annual report from the Trustees for the Social Security program indicates that this fund is starting to show deficits. The main cause of the problem is the "baby boomers" effect. In 2004, the annual deficit for the year 2033 was $300 billion, so it is projected to exhaust Social Security reserves in 2041. This issue has became "The Third Rail of American Politics," in other words, if they touch it they are considered dead. Some presidential candidates offered during their campaigns to solve this problem, but it looks like their proposals did not take into account the current crises in Wall Street and in the housing market.

Nice cool mornings, beautiful warm sunny days...yes, spring is in the air. That can only mean one thing: tax time is near. If you still owe tax money on your earnings you may be dreading the fact that taxes are due by October 31st. Most Australians, however, look forward to getting a tax refund cheque.

Paying taxes wasn't always this bad ? there was a time when not every single manufactured good had tax piled on its price. But what the heck, there isn't much we can do about it, rallying on the streets while waving placards with certain official's names on it doesn't change much anyway. What it does get us is a wall of police men with little clubs in their hands and a free shower from the fire department.
