The mid-1990s saw the birth of search engine optimization, with content providers and webmasters optimizing search engines for their advantage. In those days, all a webmaster had to do was submit a URL or a page to the many engines. This was enough to spend virtual spiders crawling through the page, extracting links to other pages, and returning the information found on indexed pages. The earliest known use of search engine optimization as a phrase, however, was documented in July 26, 1997 on Usenet. Not long after, site owners began to realize the value of having highly visible and top-ranked sites in engine search engine results.
