Caravan Insurance - Top Tips For Touring Caravans
Did you know that you don't actually need caravan insurance for touring caravans in the UK? Your caravan will be covered for third party liability by your car insurance (obviously you will need to check this!).
Did you also know you'd be nuts not to have separate insurance for your touring caravan? Let's put it another way. Is it wise to take a valuable asset out ON the road when if anything happens to it other than a third party damaging it in an insured incident and you will be out of pocket to the tune of hundreds maybe thousands of pounds?
I think I've made my point. Anyway and to my main point. I'd like to offer you some tips about caravan insurance, things you should do and know both before you take out insurance and while your insurance is in effect. These things could save you a lot of heartache and possibly even more money:
- Make it Secure: It is very important to ensure your caravan is secure and both at home and when ON a trip. To be covered by insurance you will find that it will need either a specified or agreed wheelclamp fitted and or a wheel removed (obviously not while being towed:) ).
- Know what you're NOT covered for: Be clear that your insurance is not going to cover you for anything other than social, domestic and or pleasure purposes. There may be other things that it doesn't cover you for. Make sure you read it and know what these things are.
- You have a 14 day cooling OFF period: This is a standard financial right and bought in to protect against some of the pressure selling tactics used in the past. If you decide the insurance is not right for you, you have the right to cancellation it and receive your money back. Less any period for which the insurance was active.
- Make sure you notify the insurance company of changes of circumstances: Such things as a change in the security arrangements or place of storage mean you should notify the insurers. Also if you or anyone who lives with you is declared bankrupt or is convicted of a criminal act. Failing to do this could invalidate your insurance.
- You often get what you pay for: Cheapest doesn't necessarily mean best. The overriding concern should be that you are properly covered and rather than cheaply covered.
- Be clear of what to do in the event you need to claim: Make sure you know who to contact and how to contact them. And be clear of your responsibilities and for instance maintaining a record of any costs incurred by yourself.
- Shop Around: There are a number of specialist caravan insurers. Don't just go for the first one you come across. It may not have the coverage you require, and even if it does and you may be able to get the same cheaper elsewhere. The best place to do this is online and where you will be able to compare the policies and their prices.
If you follow these simple tips they will take you a long way to getting the right caravan insurance.
