Prostate Cancer

Who really is at risk of getting prostate cancer? Research has shown that those aged 50 and above are at a higher risk. The cause for this disease is not known though there are some factors that could contribute to its cause. They include the following:

_ Testosterone: This is the male hormone. Although it does not cause cancer and it usually feeds its growth.

- Heredity: If a man's father or sibling had this disease then his chances of suffering from it are very high.

- Diet: A diet rich in animal fat could make a man get exposed to prostate cancer while eating a lot of fruits and vegetables especially those that are tomato based and could reduction the risk.

What are some of the symptoms?

Passing urine 4 to 6 times after going to bed sends a signal that things are not alright.
You might also experience some pain while passing urine or find that the flow is poor.
Urinary tract infection is also another sign that needs you to consult your doctor urgently.
Difficulty in achieving an erection and of course this is when you rule out stress and other factors that might make you not to have an erection.
Painful or lack of ejaculation is another cause for alarm.

If you experience the above symptoms and it is highly advisable that you go for a prostatic specific antigen (PSA) test. If the doctor finds it to be ON the higher side (a normal PSA is 4), then a prostate biopsy is done just to put your finger ON exactly what you are suffering from. It could be a benign or a malignant tumor. If malignant and then treatment is started immediately to arrest the cancerous cells before they metastasize.
