Piaggio is the fourth largest producer of motorcycles and scooters in the world. Based in Pontedera, Italy, they also produce more than 600,000 vehicles annually among other products like scooter tuning and piaggio motorcycle parts.

Company’s History

The company was founded by Rinaldo Piaggio in 1884 with an initial focus on producing locomotives and Railway carriages. However with the eruption of World War I, the company spotlight changed to airplanes producing. This concept of aeronautical venture for the company spread up to World War II as Piaggio produced fighter planes before its Pontedera plant got completely demolished by bombing.

Enrico Piaggio, the son of piaggio’s founder Rinaldo Piaggio re-invented piaggio with an idea to design inexpensive vehicle for the wounded economy of the Italy. This marked the development of an easy to drive, robust and affordable vehicle that could carry passengers without getting the driver’s clothing dirty.

Several year later, Piaggio launched Vespa scooter which become so popular with the masses leading to production of a million units by 1956, 10 years after it’s launched in to the market.
