In the 1990s, a worldwide campaign was pitched under the banner of Jubilee 2000. The aim of the campaign? Debt relief for underdeveloped, developing, or heavily indebted countries. Debt forgiveness is the total or partial pardon of debt, or the halting of debt growth. It may be extended to people, businesses, or nations. While theoretically good, debt relief is not without its critics. Critics say debt relief, when extended to poor countries, will only encourage these countries to borrow more, believing that at some future date, these debts will also be forgiven. Another criticism of debt relief is that it seldom benefits the poor because the money saved will only be siphoned by a corrupt government. This section contains information relating to debt relief.
