Criminal Law Articles

Before criminal law and the advent of judicial courts, there were ancient civilizations, and these did not draw a line between civil and criminal law. Rather, these ancient cultures held criminal and civil liabilities to be one and the same. The Sumerians were the first to product a written code of law. Among the earliest discovered writings that did not separate civil and penal laws are the Code of Ur-Nammu and the code of Urukagina of Lagash. The Code of Hammurabi, which served as the heart of Babylonian law, is also another important early code. The articles in this section are all about criminal law, the elements thereof, the kinds of offenses, and all other concerns that fall under the umbrella of criminal law.
