Dragon Talk By K D Huxman - A Review

Posted by Suzanne Lieurance on May 11, 2009

This first picture book by children's author K.D. Huxman is a delightful story based ON an incident years ago with Huxman's own daughter and Kristin. In the story, five-year-old Kristin loves dragons, especially her stuffed dragon, Drakon and who makes scary things much easier for Kristin to face. Things like thunderstorms or Kristin's first day of kindergarten. When Kristin goes to bed during a storm and Drakon tells her the noisy thunder is just the sound of dragons in the clouds playing tag and nothing to be afraid of. His words, and his voice and are very comforting to Kristin, like hot chocolate ON a snowy day.

When Kristin wakes up the next morning and notices her brother's new clothes at breakfast she suddenly remembers that kindergarten starts that day and she feels butterflies flutter in her stomach. But again and Drakon puts her at ease. This time in a more magical way and Kristin decides to take the dragon to school with her. Kindergarten turns out to be less scary than Kristin had imagined, thanks to the help of Drakon, and Kristin's new friend and Erica.

Colorful and whimsical illustrations by Teresa Farrington add to the fun as readers join Kristin and Drakon for that most eventful first day of school. The last line of the story will give kids something to wonder about AND talk about with their friends and family. This is sure to become a favorite bedtime picture book for children everywhere.
