Bergamo is a city with around 120,000 habitants, located in the northeast of Italy. It is only 40 km away from Milan.

According to the latest news, Bergamo is ready to host the 2015 World Championships which is a cycling mega sports under Union Cycliste Internationale (International Cycling Union). The 13-kilometre city course will be mainly held in the upper city of Bergamo.

People may get confused that why there is an upper city in Bergamo. In fact, the city of Bergamo is divided into two parts with highly distinct styles. The upper city is named "Città Alta", which is surrounded by Venetian walls built in the 17th century and is well-known for its historic attractions and medieval atmosphere. There are a large number of places of interest to visit in this part of Bergamo. The buildings built in different times will fascinate you a lot. San Michele al Pozzo Bianco which was built in 12th century is a church consisting of a wealth of frescos and paintings by Lorenzo Lotto; The Battistero is an elegant octagonal building dating from 1340; Rocca Castle which started to be constructed in 1331and finished by the lord of Milan; Cappella Colleoni is also a church but the building is indeed a masterwork of Renaissance architecture and decorative art.

The upper city is always tourists’ first choice to visit in Bergamo. However, living in the upper city is extremely expensive.

Then, it comes to the lower city, also known as “Città Bassa”. The city is a typical northern Italy industrialized city which is modern and busy. The life pace is always fast and vibrant. The energetic people in the lower city work very hard. It is said that if you leave a young man there nothing to do in five minutes,  he is able to build a house for you when you get back.

The airport which serves the city is named Orio al Serio Airport, 3.7 km southeast of Bergamo. Father of Bergamo-Orio airport, Ilario Testa witnessed the development of the airport from 1993 when the first flight took off from the airport. He was in the position of president of the Sacbo which is the operation company of the airport from 1993 until the year of 2008 when he suddenly died. It is him who sensed the potential of low cost airlines and led Bergamo from a small airport to be now the third Italian airport.
