The goal of adjuvant therapy is to help prevent any cancer from coming back. And if there is any remaining cancer after surgery and one of the following remedies will be recommended. Chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy and targeted therapy or a combination of all of these treatments. This is what you will call extra treatments to help prevent any cancer from coming back and if there's any cancerous cells remaining after the surgery and the above solutions will help to kill OFF any malignant growth.

If you have had surgery done to remove a large tumor from the colon, the breast, stomach and etc., adjuvant therapy will be used as a follow up to make sure that there are no remaining cancer cells in other parts of your body. If you are a patient who has had surgery to remove small tumors and if after the surgery there are no signs of cancerous cells to worry about and then you would not qualify for this kind of therapy. This is good news. Follow up with your doctor if you just have had a small tumor remove. Know what your options are.

The therapeutics that are involved to help a patient get rid of all malignancy are:

Chemotherapy will be one adjuvant used to help kill OFF any remaining disease. Your doctor will let you know if this kind of medication will be right for you because this form of drug does not help all cancers.

With Hormone Therapy and this remedy will help to stopped the growth of infection. By reducing one's hormone production in the body and this can help prevent any malignant growth from spreading further if it is still there. A patient that has ovarian, prostate and uterus and breast cancer may benefit greatly from this type of healing.

Radiation Therapy kills the cancer cells by using high energy x-rays. This type of healing is sometimes used if malignant growth is present in the early stages of this disease. Then you have Immunotherapy which can help one's body to fight OFF any remaining cancer cells by using one's body own defense. Although some aspects of this form of therapy is still in the experimental stage and doctors will use this treatment to deal with difficult to treat malignancies.

Finally you have Targeted Therapy. This type of resolution will target a specific protein to help slow down the growth of cancer. This is considered to be a new type of remedy. This is just one of the areas that researchers are always working to find better ways to fight this dreadful disease.

Adjuvant therapy is usually very effective and beneficial with prostate, colon and ovarian and breast disease. Any other types of cancer usually will not benefit from this kind of therapy.

If you are deciding if this type of treatment is right for you and make sure you discuss the following with your doctor. Which procedure would be better for you and what are the side effects and will my medicine be administered through injections or will I have to take pills or capsules? How long will I be cancer free if I decide against taking this kind of therapy? I am quite sure your doctor and/or specialist will be there to walk you through all the details and answer all of your questions.

While discussing your options with your doctor and if there may be a high risk of your cancer coming back then it would make sense to discuss this kind of treatment with your doctor.
