Benzodiazepine, as its name suggests is a formed by the fusion of a benzene ring and a diazepine ring. The result is a psychoactive drug that can be used as a sedative, anxiolytic, amnesic, muscle relaxant and anticonvulsant. This group of drugs is used to treat anxiety, agitation, insomnia, seizures, muscle spasms, etc. However, Benzodiazepine has its side effects including paradoxical effects and cognitive impairments. The psychological and physical effects due to long-term use can be even more adverse. It can lead to tolerance, a dependence on the drug and can show withdrawal symptoms if the drug is stopped.

More popularly known as Ativan, a name formerly used for this group of drug, Lorazepam is a kind of benzodiazepine drug. As with any other drug that belongs to the group of benzodiazepine, Lorazepam also has its own set of side effects. That is not to say that the one should stay away from the drug. But only take the drug when you are prescribed to do so, follow the dosage, and don’t keep taking the drug beyond the period stipulated by your doctor. Klonopin is a trade-name used for the Clonazepam group of drugs which is a derivative of the benzodiazepine group of drugs. The drugs main therapeutic uses are of an anticonvulsant and muscle relaxant and it has anxiolytic properties. But due to its potent strength it has been much abused and has been known to be used as a street drug. That the drug has been misused and has been continually done so, makes it even more important for us to find out what can be the side effects. Ativan is the name formerly used for Lorazepam, though in daily parlance Ativan is still a very common word and is probably used more than Lorazepam. The fact that the name still survives is testimony to the fact that how popular Ativan was from its very beginning and it continues to remain so. However, people always knew that the benzodiazepine drug had its set of side effects and this awareness is increasingly growing. In fact, the very effects of Ativan as a sedative, anxiolytic, amnesic, muscle relaxant and anticonvulsant, can be termed as side effects if they are unwanted.
